The first couple visits did not go so well and Jefferson does not talk to Grant at all. Jefferson wants Grant to go away and acts like a hog. After a couple more visits, Jefferson begins getting comfortable talking with Grant and expressing his inner feelings.
Reverend Ambrose and Grant's girlfriend, Vivian, meet with him at his home. Grant does not believe in God, but Reverend Ambrose wants to Grant Jefferson through God. Grant thinks that there are other options than religion and wants to make Jefferson realize that he is an important person and not just some animal.
Grant and Jefferson are speaking regularly and Grant tells Jefferson that he represents the black community. He tells him that when he was called a hog, he called them all hogs. Grant says that Jefferson is a symbol to the black community and that he should die with dignity. The black community is aware that Jefferson had been wrongly convicted.
