The main characters (left to right) are Mrs. Weera (Ellis 55), Parvana (Ellis 15), Nooria (Parvana's Sister) (Ellis 25), Fatana (Parvana's mom) (Ellis 25), and Parvana's dad (Ellis 15).
The setting is a musty, worn out, apartment, where they were moved to when Parvana's family's house got bombed (Ellis 24).
The conflict is between the Taliban, (the bad guys that have taken over Afghanistan) and the Afghans in Kabul(The city-folk) (Ellis 16).
One theme in "The Breadwinner" is have the courage to stand up. When Parvana stands up for her father with her mother to try and get him out of jail, she faces the Taliban but she's not afraid ( Ellis 43).
The social issue in "The Breadwinner" is power. Since the Taliban have weapons, they have more power, and so Parvana and others cant do anything since they dont have weapons (Ellis 35).
The scale represents the power imbalance between men and woman. Under the Taliban, woman have to stay in their houses unless a man takes them outside (Ellis 15).
