Poetry + (hard to impress, knowledgeable and highly capable) 10th grade students?!?
Even the slightest mention of poetry will send them to Antiquity likely disengaging all but a few! How can I help them understand poetry as something relevant to their lives today?
Enter technology! After all, this is the twenty-first century. Many students are familiar and comfortable with using tech tools.
Inspiration can be found anywhere. For this poetry project, students had to "search" for places that inspired them. The choice was 100% theirs. Some found inspiration in the hustle and bustle of city life (even right in the cafeteria) while others preferred scenarios more in tune with nature.
Lessons Learned and Insights Gained 1. Diigo is a great app to share and comment on each others' work. 2. Poetry can be fun! But also very difficult! 3.Taking pictures on Instagram helped in memory recall and recreating feelings and scenarios. 4. Creative collaboration is the best thing that can happen! 5. Language makes us and breaks us too. 6. Language is organic! 7. I never knew you could play with words. 8. Even the smallest thing can inspire a poem.
