Ji-Li arrives at her first day of middle school. She meets Chang Hong in the school lobby, and meets Bai Shan later in the classroom.
Ji-Li is in class on her first day of school, she is disappointed by what is being taught. She is being taught English, of course, but most of the classes are centred around Chairman Mao and Communism, rather than typical school subjects.
Ji-Li is in teaches Zhang's office, as he recommends she participate in the class education exhibition. Ji-Li is surprised by this, considering her family background and class status. Ji-Li agrees to help.
Ji-Li works with others to make a portrait of Chairman Mao out of dyed millet grains. Many of her classmates are tired, but Ji-Li and Chang Hong continue to work all night.
Ji-Li reads a story of a landlord and how he is cruel to everyone he employs. She finds the story emotional and finds it difficult not to shed tears, which, in fact, she ends up doing.
Ji-Li is called to a meeting in which chairman Jin replaces her with Fang Fang in the class education exhibition. He does this as a result of Ji-Li's refusal to comply with Thin-Faces demands for her to confess to her father's "counter-revolutionary actions".
