This is a Goliath Grouper! They can grow up to 8 feet long and get as heavy as 800 pounds! I better be careful they don't think I'm dinner!
For many years, people have fished for both species of goliath groupers. In the early 1990s, the Atlantic species was listed as critically endangered. Harvesting the animal for food was banned in the U.S
There are 2 species of Goliath Groupers. The Atlantic species lives off the coast of western Africa. The Pacific species can be found in the eastern Pacific Ocean from southern California to Peru.
Even though most fish find them intimidating, humans have little to fear. Many people familiar with them call the fish “gentle giants.”
Young goliath groupers often make their homes among mangroves. Adults prefer coral reefs and other shallow, rocky parts of the sea. They especially love sunken ships
