Ponce de Leon and the discovery of America
Ponce de Leon was a conquistador who's mission was to discover new places. Ponce was hurt by the king's actions after he was replaced by Christopher Columbus' son as the governor of Puerto Rico.
On April 2nd, 1513 he came across a land full of wild flowers and fragrented plants. The day was Easter, a Christian holiday, so he named the land "La Florida." In Spain, Easter is known as Pascua Floride or "Flowery Easter."
He was appointed Governor by the king and was asked to start a colony. In 1521 Ponce de Leon returned with 300 settlers. However the Calusa, a Native American people attacked the expedition.
Many Spainiards died in the fighting. Ponce de Leon himself was seriously injured and died fighting a few days later.
Another attempt was made by the Spaniards to colonize Florida, but were once attacked by the Native American tribe (the Apalchee). Florida was finally colonized by the French.
