  • Ponce de Leon and the discovery of America
  • Ponce de Leon was a conquistador who's mission was to discover new places. Ponce was hurt by the king's actions after he was replaced by Christopher Columbus' son as the governor of Puerto Rico.
  • On April 2nd, 1513 he came across a land full of wild flowers and fragrented plants. The day was Easter, a Christian holiday, so he named the land "La Florida." In Spain, Easter is known as Pascua Floride or "Flowery Easter."
  • Boujour!
  • He was appointed Governor by the king and was asked to start a colony. In 1521 Ponce de Leon returned with 300 settlers. However the Calusa, a Native American people attacked the expedition.
  • Many Spainiards died in the fighting. Ponce de Leon himself was seriously injured and died fighting a few days later.
  • Another attempt was made by the Spaniards to colonize Florida, but were once attacked by the Native American tribe (the Apalchee). Florida was finally colonized by the French.
