Internal Conflict (man vs. self) - When Tess was admitted to hospital because of her eating disorder, Ned never came to visit her which made her really upset because she though he loved her but over time she slowly got over him. 3 years later he came back and she fell for him again although she tried not to because of what he done and how he treated her last time.
Why isn't he coming? Could he of really just left me? He did this to me he should be here trying to help me!
External Conflict (man vs. man) Tess does rowing and for a long time her and the captain of the rowing team have been fighting because the captain is always yelling at her and saying that she loses the race for the team. From her saying that Tess starts to believe it and it contributes to her anxiety and thinks that everyone else in the team thinks the same.
Oh my god Tess! You need to be quicker and stronger you are the reason why we always lose!
Internal Conflict (man vs. self) - At the end of the book Ned takes Tess to this bridge. There they sit on the edge of it and Ned persuades her to stand up and let go of the cable. She lets go but doesn't last long. Tess slips and grabs the cable. She screams as she is left there dangling from a bridge 100 meters above the highway. She looks up to realize that Ned wasn't there, he never was. Slowly she climbs down and realizes that she needs to be free of him.
He really has never been here has he? And he nearly killed me!
