Storyboard Text

  • Why are states so weak? Let's give 'em some power!
  • Eh-it would be fun?
  • Well, these Articles of Confederation don't protect your rights in every state, and currency would be different, too.
  • Would you want no common laws between the states?
  • I mean, this is looking a bit dicey. But now they can't rule like a king and abuse power. This at least isn't the old government.
  • Not only that, but now the government can't impose or collect taxes, even if they need money. They can only borrow it.
  • This isn't like the old government. They have no power to abuse.
  • Their only power is to suggest a law or amendment. A law takes 9 out of 13 states to approve and an amendment takes 100% support.
  • But it satisfies the people who felt bossed around by the king. We even have a couple of departments
  • This government doesn't seem like it would get anything done.
  • Wait a minute. One state can throw the whole government off?
  • Yeah, and that's all it does. If the government can only borrow money, then how can it pay off its war debts?
  • So Rhode Island is equal to Pennsylvania and that's equal to Massachusetts?
  • But we're all Americans, right? We should all be equal.
  • Exactly. Also, the states only have one vote, regardless of population.
