The four Birling's and Gerald are seated at the table, they are celebrating Sheila and Gerald's engagement.
Sheila and Mrs. Birling go to the drawing room. Inspector Goole enters looking for information about a young woman who died in the infirmary because she'd swallowed a lot of strong disinfectant. Her name was Eva Smith.
Mr. Birling remembers that Eva Smith was employed at his factory and he sacked her because she went on strike then demanded for higher rates. Sheila enters and catches up with what has happened, she is horrified and upset. Mr.Birling tries to protect Sheila from hearing this horrible business. Birling thinks he is justified.
