Your honor, order my arrest. I am Jean Valjean.
It was in the same year of his retaking that Jean Valjean was presumed dead when he fell from a ship. In reality, he had escaped.
After Jean Valjean escaped, he travelled to Monterfeil. Here he saved Cosette, the late Fantine's beloved daughter, from the clutches of the Thenardiers.
That was when Jean Valjean and his newly adopted daughter escaped to Paris. They led a frugal life with limited resources, yet Valjean gave to those who had less than him. He became known as "the beggar who gives alms." (Paradox)
Soon Valjean discovered that Javert, the officer determined to put him away, had followed him to his new life. Valjean led Cosette down dimly lit streets as they fled from Javert and his soldiers. It was a frightful experience. Eventually, they came to a dead end, so Valjean used a rope from a street light to scale a wall with Cosette. They escaped.
They found themselves in the garden of a convent. Here they met an old gardener by the name of Fauchelevent. It was the man Valjean had saved from being crushed by a cart as Father Madeleine! Fauchelevent wore a bell to ward the nuns of the convent away from the only man in their province. To pay Valjean back for saving his life, Fauchelevent let them sleep in his bed. From here Valjean took the identity of Ultimus Fauchelevent, the gardener's brother' and worked alongside him in the convent's garden. Cosette schooled under the nuns teachings in the convent. Although the two saw only glimpses of each other, they were happy.
