Mountains and seas made it very difficult to travel. Travel by land was extremely hard in it's own right. People walked or rode in carts with their items pulled by oxen or mules. Roads were unpaved and often had large rocks, stones or other barriers that could break the cart if run over.
In Greece, it is difficult for us to farm because of the scare land and water. The shortage of farmland sometimes led to wars. Since there wasn't much flat land to farm on, farmers often built steps into the hills to create flat land where they could farm.

When populations started to rise to unstable numbers the people in power decided it was best to send people off to surrounding islands to start colonies and maintain happiness.

Trade is important for the Greeks. The boat were sometimes treacherous, but we needed olive oil, grains, and pottery.
