Buck left the campsite where John Thornton stayed. He felt a wild call in him.
The call was coming from lean and grey timber wolf. Buck felt that he should get back so nothing bad would happen to Thornton.
When Buck got back, he sensed an odd feeling. John Thornton was dead because of the Yeehat Indians. Buck knew he would be on a rampage without Thornton.
Buck didn't have anywhere else to go so he tried to find the timber wolf. He found the wolf, but the wolf was with her pack so the pack was trying to see if Buck was a friend or foe.
