  • A woman called Madame Loisel is unhappy with her living conditions & thinks that she deserves better than what she currently has. Her husband comes home one day and gives her an invitation to a ball.
  • Climax
  • Madame Loisel buys a fancy dress with the money her husband gave her for the ball. She also borrows a diamond necklace from her friend Madame Forestier. 
  • Falling Action
  • Madame Loisel goes to the ball and is the most beautiful woman there. 
  • Resolution
  • When Madame Loisel leaves the ball, her husband throws her regular clothes over her neck. Embarrassed, she runs off to find a taxi. When she takes off her regular clothes, she finds that the necklace is gone. 
  • The Loisels pay for an imitation necklace to replace Madame Forestier's, which causes them to be in immense debt & poverty for ten whole years. 
  • One day Madame Loisel runs into Madame Forestier. The story ends with Madame Loisel finding out that the original necklace she had borrowed was an imitation itself!
