This carbon atom's journey starts in the atmosphere.
Through diffusion by photosynthesis, plants harness energy from the sun and take the carbon to form glucose and oxygen.
Animals ingest the plants and the carbon stored in the plants.
The animals die, and their bodies decay into the soil.
Some soil bacteria produce methane when breaking down materials in low-oxygen conditions. Large amounts of methane is produced this way in wetlands and landfills.
Methane in the Earth's atmosphere is broken down into carbon dioxide through a series of reactions. This has returned the carbon to the atmosphere.
