Backround: Backround: He was born in Geneva in 1712. By the time he was 13 his mother died and his father was forced to leave Geneva. Rosseau was abandoned and was forced to work as an apprentace to an engraver and was brutally mistreated. When he was 16 he fled to travel around Europe, he met many wealthy people who funded his education in music and philosophy. At 30 he moved to Paris and died in 1778.
Acheivments: He was known enormous influence on the type of government he supported(document 6b) He thought that government should exist on the basis of a democratic social contract.

He inherited his familys title when his uncle died. he was a critical, insightful, and humorous. He became an admired guest in the Enlightenment salons of Paris, where he demonstrated his cleverness and biting wit.(document 4b)
Acheivments: He was a great admirer of the English system, and thought it was superior to the French system of absolute monarch. Montesquieu was especially worried about the protection of the political library.
