Exposition: The setting of the story is somewhere in the Antarctic while The Man, who is a "cheechako" to the land, is walking down the Chilkoot Pass with a dog
Rising Action: "The Animal was depressed by the tremendous cold. It Knew it was no time for traveling.. In reality, it was not merely colder than fifty below zero; it was colder than sixty below, than seventy below. It was seventy-five below zero"
Rising Action: He knew that the coldest snaps never froze these springs , and he knew likewise their danger. They were traps . They hid pools of water under the snow that might be three inches deep or three feet.
Rising Action: "he compelled the dog to go on in front. The dog did not want to go. It hung back until the man shoved it foward , and it then it want quickly across the white unbroken snow. Suddenly It broke through.."
Climax:"And then it happened. At a place where there were no signs, where soft,unbroken snow seemed to advertise solidity beneath, the man broke through. it was not deep. He wet himself halfway to the knew before he floundered out the firm crust
Resolution: The man accepted his death after failing to create a fire. Instead his final thought thought that it was "A good idea, he thought, to sleep off to death. It was like an anesthetic. Freezing was not so bad as people thought. There were lots worse ways to die"
