France raised to little taxes. It spent more money than it collected in taxes, and the food prices were hight and pay was low. The people of France paid few taxes.
Bastille July 14, 1789
The first estate was the clergy. The second was the nobility. The third was the common people. The king wanted the people to vote for more taxes, but the nobility didn't want to get rid of their privileges.
Declaration of The Rights of Man
The common people walked out and declared themselves the National assembly. They promised to write a constitution for France. The revolution had finally begun.
King Louis killed
On July 14, a group of armed people set off for Bastille, a fortress and a prison in France. At Bastille the people killed the governor, soldiers, and other officials. Seven prisoners were freed. To this day French people regard July 14th as Independence day.
This declaration stated that the all people should have the rights of freedom and equality. The words of the declaration were " Liberty, equality, fraternity" These words became the battle cry of the revolution.
King Louis ran away but was caught. He was convicted with treason and the next day he faced the Guillotine.
