Phillip is sent to the assistent principals office by Ms.Narwin for "singing", or humming during the National Anthem. Phillip was not suspended for this. He was suspended for not apologizing after Dr. Palleni asks him to many times. Phillip was offered a deal, apologize and no suspension. Phillip doesn't take it and he gets a two day suspension.
After Phillip gets suspended he tells his parents a lie. He said he was suspended for singing the National Anthem. His dad gets the idea that the school is against patriotism. The Malloy's contact Ted Griffen, a neighbor running for school board. Ted Griffen takes this opportunity for the election. Ted makes Phil's story public with the help of Jennifer Stewart, a reporter.
After the incident becomes public. Many people have things to say to Phillip and Ms. Narwin. Letters to Narwin were hate letters. Telling her to quit teaching and let students be patriotic. Ironically letters were sent to Phillip praising him for his patriotism.
