This is Winston Smith. He works at the Ministry of Truth as a propaganda officer. And is an insignificant official at the Party
Since the beginning he has followed instructions but has always had doubts about the Party and the way they handle things. The tv in his house is a spying machine that detetcs everything he does and notices the Party if he is doing something illegal.
As an outlet and way of expressing himself, he started writing a diary in a corner not visible for the tv and Big Brother. This was his first way of rebelling against the Party.
Winston's second rebellion was the love affair he started with Julia, a woman that works at the Ministry of Truth in the Fiction Department.
Winston found security and trust in O'brien because he thought they shared the same perspective of rebellion and disagreement with the Party.
"Winston realizes that the Party requires its members to deny the evidence of their eyes and ears. He believes that true freedom lies in the ability to interpret reality as one perceives it, to be able to say “2 + 2 = 4.” This adds to the fact of his Thought Crimes, which are another way of rebelling against the Party.
