Storyboard Text

  • Hey, why does this thermometer have silver liquid instead of red?
  • That thermometer has gallium in it! Some use it as a safer alternative to mercury.
  • Gallium is a soft, silvery-white metal, similar to aluminum
  • What's gallium?
  • Gallium is cool in many ways, actually. It is also used in red LEDs because of its ability to convert electricity to light. It's also non-toxic!
  • Wow, that's so cool!
  • Yeah! It's even a useful silicon substitute for the electronic industry and it can be used to hold nuclear bomb pits together.
  • Gallium melts at 86.5 degrees Fahrenheit, just low enough to melt in your hand. And again, unlike mercury, it's non-toxic and safe to play with!
  • THAT'S AMAZING! Gallium is so cool.
