  • The Carthaginians invaded Italy in 261 B.C. Carthage wanted Sicily and so did Rome. Carthage already had colonies on Sicily so the Romans sent an army to Sicily to attack. They started a war that lasted 20 Years.

  • Romans built ships that would latch onto the Carthaginian ships so they wouldn't have to fight them head on. Rome won the first war. Carthage lost Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica because of the war.

  • There was a man named Hannibal. He was Hamilcar's son. He wanted to fulfill his destiny. Carthage had expanded. Hannibal sent an army of 37 elephants, 60,000 soldiers and 6,000 horses.

  • Hannibal's army had to move the elephants across the water and it was hard to transport each and every one of them. Hannibal tried another route across the alps which also didn't go well. Each elephant died because of the climate.

  • The two generals had respected each other. Hannibal and Scipio talked. Carthage was forced to give up Spain. Rome was the most powerful force in the Mediterranean region.
  • Carthage was still a great trading center. Carthage was no longer in military power. In 146 B.C the Romans burnt down the city of Carthage.
