In some place in Nigeria there was a village called Umuafia and a man called Okonkwo, was well known because he was a great wrestler and very strong. Unoka was his father that never paid the debts and was lazy. Okonkwo's nightmare was to become like his father, "He had no patience with unsuccessful men. He had no patience with his father" (Achebe, 1992, pg. 2).
Ikemefuna is a new member of the family that came from another village. After three years of living with them, the oracle declares that he must be killed, but Okonkwo does not want to do it because he told him father. Someone else killed him, but he does not want to look weak so he finally kills him, "He heard Ikemefuna cry, 'My father, they had killed me!' as he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down"(Achebe, 1992,pg. 53).
Okonkwo and Ekwefi were helping Ezinma get cured when she was ill. Okonkwo had to help his favorite child,"He went into Ekwefi's hut, put down his load and sat down. 'Get me a pot,' he said, 'and leave the child alone."(Achebe,1992, pg. 75).
