Theseus, the duke of Athens, is going to marry Hippolyta in four days. Meanwhile, Egeus promised Hermia in marriage to Demetrius but she had fallen in love with Lysander and they wanted to get married. Theseus told Hermia that she needed to obey her father or she would be punished by the law.
Hermia, you have to please your father by marrying Demetrius.
But father,my heart belongs to Lysander.
Hermia, you have to obey your father, if not, expect to be in a nunnery or dead.
Lysander and Hermia ran away to his aunt's house, located in the outside of Athens, where they could get married and be free from the Athenian law. Hermia, trusting Helena, told her about their plan. Nevertheless, she betrayed her trust by telling Demetrius everything and following them trying to stop the marriage.
No one can get between us.
The course of true love never did run smooth but with my wealthy and childless aunt's help we will finally be together.
But Hermia does not love you, and I do. I will always do.
Oberon, after watching Demetrius and Helena fighting, orders Puck to put a few drops of the flower's juice that will serve as a love potion (the same one used on Hippolyta) on Demetrius's eyes. That way he would be the one chasing Helena at the end of the night. Puck confused Demetrius with Lysander making him fall in love with Helena (she was the first person that he saw). This created a lot of confusion and anger amongst the four young Athenians.
Go away Helena. I do not want to see you again, I do not love you and I never will.
Oberon realizes that Puck made a mistake and used the potion on Lysander instead of Demetrius. Hermia thought that Lysander was dead since she couldn't see him anywhere. Demetrius was upset because Hermia didn't love him and Helena thought that Lysander was making fun of her by saying that he loved her. Puck, with the help of Oberon, remedied his mistake, making Demetrius fall in love with Helena and Lysander with Hermia.
I love you Helena, why don't you love me back?
But you love Hermia, not me.
Hermia, come back to Athens with me. There we will get married.
Where is Lysander?
The four young Athenians were resting when the duke of Athens appeared and invited them to his wedding. There they could get married and share with him the happiness of love.
I know how hard love can be. Come with me, today is my wedding and you may get married during my ceremony.
The three married couples watched "The Most Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thisbe", a play directed by Peter Quince. And everyone lived happily forever after.
