Montano, the island’s governor, watches a conflict with two men. A third man confirms his prediction that as his ship traveled from Venice, Cassio saw that the Turks lost most of their fleet in the tempest. It is unclear whether Othello’s ship has been able to survive this storm. On the ship, is Iago, Emilia, Desdemona, and Roderigo. They wait for the third ship to arrive. Desdemona begins to degrade women. Othello arrives and kisses Desdemona He thanks the Cypriots for their welcome and hospitality, and orders Iago to unload the ship. Iago tells Roderigo that Desdemona will get tired of being with Othello and will want a more well-mannered man. Roderiogo thinks Cassio would suit Desdemona best. Iago then explains his actions in a soliloquy. He is suspicious that Othello has slept with Emilia. Therefore, he chooses to act in love with her. If Iago is unable to get his revenge by sleeping with Desdemona, Roderigo’s claim of Cassio will make Othello suspect him of sleeping with his wife and torture Othello.
The announcement occurs that Othello plans for the evening in celebration of Cyprus’s safety from the Turks and in celebration of his marriage to Desdemona. There is a nervous banter between Iago and Desdemona. It gives off the sense that Othello's ship is still missing. Iago reverts to insults to express his anger. Desdemona again begins to describe herself as an independent woman and outspoken. She does not need her husband both socially and intellectually. Iago goes on to express his love for Desdemona for her hand in marriage.
Othello leaves to catch the revelers and Iago explains his plan. Roderigo and a few other Cypriots who have been drinking with go along with Roderigo and Cassio in guard duty. Iago leads Cassio into committing actions that will put him in jeopardy. Cassio returns as he is drinking. He is with Montano and several attendants. He becomes intoxicated and wanders of the stage. Iago begins to tell Montano that Cassio is a great solider, however, he has such a harsh drinking problem. 8.) Roderigo enters as Cassio chases him, intoxicated, and threatening to beat him. Montano steps into the fight in hopes to prevent it , however, Cassio begins to attack him. Montano tries to hold Cassio down and Cassio stab him. Alarms ring the Othello shows up with a group of armed attendants.
