Storyboard Text

  • You could say my childhood was good. I was born in Smithfield, Ohio on January 9th, 1821. My parents are William Sharon and Susan Kirk. Schooling went very well for me as well.
  • Hello Mr. Sharon! I would just like to ask you a few easy questions to start off. How was your childhood? Schooling as well, how was that?
  • I attended Ohio University only then i moved to St. Louis Missouri and continue studying Law. After getting my licence, i then pursued in business.
  • How lovely! Where did you go?
  • Well i moved to California in 1849, during the gold rush. I engaged in business and real estate though i lost my earnings in stock speculations. And well, afterwards, the newly formed Bank Of America came and offered me a job. I represented it's interest on the comstock.
  • Thats nice! I know you moved to California to pursue what you wanted to do. When did you do that and what were your steps afterwords?
  • I really trust my judgement. A lot of smaller banks loaned money to mining companies at five percent interest. And i cut that by only charging two percent, but the mines had to repay the loan amount whenever i said so. The mines were soon in dept with the bank so we started to conton the comstocks major mines. it definitely earned me more money.
  • It was really different. I always saw myself being a minor but when i got the opportunity to be in business i don't think i ever thought of not accepting. It was a big step. I definitely had a lot of ups and downs, but it brought me down a good road.
  • Interesting, interesting. What was it like to be a minor and then become a wealthy bank owner? And was it scary for you take all these risks for mining as a bank owner?
  • Well I felt quite attacked actually. He was slandering my name. And after just getting into politics i really couldn't really have that. He acted like i was completely hated and feared. So i bought it out, it was the right thing to do, and it led me to winning the Senate seat.
  • Well to build it, we had to get money from local officials in Carson City, which of course was tricky, and from other towns that were afraid the railroad town would pass their towns. That was tricky, but i only planned to go through Carson City. I just planned for other people to pay for it.
  • Im sure it did hahahaha. Its really good to trust your judgement, so that's good. So moving on, how was going through the process of Virginia and Truckee Railroad. And after that you came into politics, how did you feel when the editor Joseph Goodman accused you of abusing power? im sure that was hard.
  • How interesting. You've had a fulfilling life. Now i know you have children. How are they?
  • Well i have a few kids, two had died in infancy, but i still have three others. Florence Emily, Frederick William, and Clara Adelaide. All very wonderful.
  • How amazing! Thanks for this interview. I very much enjoyed it. I
  • Thank you! I enjoyed it too!
