Eleanor and Park could not be any more different. Eleanor has a difficult home life and Park comes from a stable house, however feel less that in comparison to his brother. Eleanor is new in town, and she has to sit next to him on the bus. They did not get on well at all at first, not even speaking to one another.
Eleanor started to read Park's comics books over his shoulder, and through that they started to build a friendship and learn more about each other.
Park learns about Eleanors difficult home life, which includes poverty and a violent step father. Eleanor starts spending time at Parks house, to get away from the issues at her house.
Despite being hesitant at first, especially Park's mom, Park's parents accept Eleanor and learn about her home issues. Park's parents start inviting Eleanor to dinner each night.
However, as things get better with Park, and they start falling madly in love with each other, things at home take a turn for the worse for Eleanor, with Eleanor's step father almost killing her.
Since it is best for Eleanor, she goes to live with her uncle in Minesota, very far away from Park. Park writes her letters, but for months Eleanor eventually writes a letter back, and it only has three words in it "I love you ".
