I am very impressed with you today maybe we could partner to make a deaf school.
i would love yto let me run this over with sicard
This is where it started with the idea to make a deaf school so parents don't have to get a private tutor or send them to Europe for the Braid-wood academy.
The travel to america
You are very good for your first lesson in english.
thanks I have been wrighting in a journal to practice.
It was at this time that Laurent Clerc was introduced to abby Sicard and eventually became his chief assistant and in return was also introduced to Thomas G. then gave him a private lesson
The arrival in america
LAND HO!! WE MADE IT!!!!
Thomas g. told clerk about what he wanted to do in america and about Alice this motivated him even though he knew this would be a lot of work and he wouldn't be able to see his family again. His mom tried to get him to stay but he didn't. He also had to decline a job in Russia because of financial issues.
The school is built
Clerc and Gallaudet left for America on board the ship Mary Augusta on June 18, 1816.The trip lasted 52 days.Clerc used that time to teach Gallaudet "the method of the signs for abstract ideas."In return he received tutoring in english language from Gallaudet
They arrived in Hartford Connecticut on August 22,1816 the Clerc meet Alice and thought she was very smart she would be the first to enroll in the school they where going to build. They where able to raise 12,000$ in public funding then the general Connecticut gave them another 5,000$.
When the school went up Alice was the first to join followed by six others. then Clerc started to teach there. That is how the first deaf school in america was established.
