Poverty is a big part of homicide rates in DC because when it is not cared about or monitored, homicide rates go up. In 2014, homicides went up to 105. That following year, the homicide count went up to 162. This is because in 2015, poverty rates increased as well.
Men have a large majority over women in the involvement of homicides. In fact, there are more men arrested for being suspects in homicides than men who are the victims in homicides.
African Americans have a large majority over other races/ethnicities in the involvement of homicides. Black men have larger rates of homicides than Hispanics/Latinos who have little involvement as well as Whites and Asians.
Ward 8 (49.5 per 100,000) and Ward 7 (40.8 per 100,000) had the highest crude death rate of homicide while Ward 3 had the lowest rate (1.3 per 100,000) in 2010.
Homicide was the 7th leading cause of death for blacks/African Americans (34.4 per 100,000 population on) but was not in the top 10 causes of death for whites (3.0 per 100,000 population.
