Storyboard Text

  • Mr. Bounderby has made his proposal of marriage to me, and has entreated me to make it known to you...
  • ...
  • Father, do you think I love Mr. Bounderby?
  • Do you ask me to love Mr. Bounderby?
  • Does Mr. Bounderby ask me to love him?
  • ...
  • In the beginning of the chapter, Louisa enters Mr. Gradgrind's Observatory to talk to him about an important matter.
  • What would you advise me to use in its stead, father?
  • ...The disparity I have mentioned, therefore, almost ceases to be disparity, and all but disappears.
  • Shall I marry him?
  • Precisely.
  • Mr. Gradgrind informs Louisa that Mr. Bounderby has proposed marriage to her but she reacts emotionless towards her father.
  • What does it matter?
  • You have dealt so wisely with me...that I never had a child's belief or...fear
  • She then asks Mr. Gradgrind three questions regarding his thoughts on her love and emotions towards Mr. Bounderby, but he is shocked and has difficulties answering them.
  • Mrs. Gradgrind, allow me to present to you Mrs. Bounderby.
  • Louisa asks her father for advice on how to decide. He responds by using statistical data about past marriages between people of unequal ages and agrees that she should marry Mr. Bounderby.
  • Louisa tells her father that it doesn't matter what she choses since her father raised her to not have sentimentality or aspirations. He misses the point and feels successful as a father.
  • You abundantly repay my care. Kiss me, my dear girl.
  • After Louisa agrees to marry Mr. Bounderby, Mr. Gradgrind tells Mrs. Gradgrind the news and Sissy Jupe looked at Louisa with pity and sadness.
