  • You Democrats are trying to spread slavery across the nation.
  • In 1858 Abraham Lincoln was nominated by Illinois Republicans to run for an opening on the U.S senate.
  • Lincoln's opponent was Stephen Douglas, a democrat who had represented senate for Illinois since 1847. He challenged Douglas in a series of debates which later became the historic Lincoln-Douglas debates.

  • In every debate, Lincoln stressed that the main idea of the campaign was the spread of slavery in the West. He said Democrats were trying to spread slavery across the nation.
  • Lincoln brings up the Dred Scott case. He said that all African Americans were entitled to all the nations rights that were in the Declaration of Independence. He said they have "the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. "
  • All African Americans are entitled to the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
  • Douglas hoping to cost Lincoln votes, charged that Lincoln "thinks that the Negro is his brother..."
  • Although Lincoln didn't win that spot in the senate, he does in fact play a big part in the Civil War and becomes the 16th president of the United States.
