One detour of Santiago's dream was meeting Fatima. He loves Fatima so much that he almost abandon his journey because he believed that Fatima is more than the treasure he's searching.
The Crystal Merchant is the character foil in the story. Fear immobilizes him to pursue his dreams and also fear keeps him resist to change. His character highlights the good qualities of Santiago such as being risk taker,courageous and accepting changes.
The Alchemist guided Santiago to fulfill his dream by teaching him the Soul of the World.He accompanied Santiago finding his treasure in Egypt,too.
The Englishman makes Santiago realized that things are learned in different ways. Some learns through books while others are by experience. Also, he is able to encourage Santiago to be courageous in trying new things in order to learn.
