Aibileen is a black maid working for Miss Leefolt who leaves Aibileen to raise her baby girl Mae Mobley. Miss leefolt doesnt raise Mae Mobley, she just has friends over and goes run around town. Throughout this story Miss leefolt takes the "advice" from a friend and has people build a "colored restroom" , and treating Aibileen differently.
As Mae Mobley is getting older she is becoming more attatched to Aibileen. As she gets older Aibileen teaches her game about the civil rights movement and lets her know everyone is beautiful for who they are.
Then there is Minny. She works for Miss Walter , Miss Hilly mother, as she gets older her daughter wishes to put her in a home . But that would put Minny out of a job. Eventually Minny begins hearing around town that Miss Hilly spreading a rumor saying she steals making sure she will never work again. And sure enough smart-mouth Minny made a special pie for Miss Hilly.
Miss Leefolt has her weekly game of bridge with Miss hilly and Miss skeeter. Miss Skeeter who has just graduated from college is all against Miss Hilly's idea of a "separate colored restroom". She has gotten a degree for writing but is seen as a failure because she is not married. She has sent a letter to a magazine she dreams to write for but gets declined but is encouraged to continue to follow her dream of writing, so she begins working for the local paper writing articles about how to clean. Because she has no knowledge in how to fix these cleaning problems she asks Aibileen for help. Then gets the inspiration to write a book about the maids and how it is to work for white families.
After a while for searching for a job Minny began working for miss Celia Foote. She wasnt well respected by the other ladies because her husband is Miss Hilly's ex boyfriend from college. Minny was to be kept a secret from Miss Celia's husband because she was taking credit for Minny's work. She began getting suspicious of Miss celia when she would sneak awway upstairs and becoming anxious of when miss celia would tell her husband.
After months and months of interviewing different maids in secret the book was finished. It was edited and published. But when it reached jackson many maids were afraid their employers would find out. And when miss hilly had figured out it was about jackson she began telling everyone. But the ending was shamefully about her and then she decided to say it wasnt about jackson so she wouldnt be humiliated. With what the maids were paid and the book out new oppurtunities opened up for the maids and they were able to get out of those terrible conditions
