Today class we will be learning about Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Isn't Duchenne muscular dystrophy a Disease ?
Yes, is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. It is one of nine types of muscular dystrophy. DMD is caused by an absence of dystrophin, a protein that helps keep muscle cells intact. Girls can be carriers and mildly affected, but the disease typically affects boys.
why does it affect boys more ?
Males have only one copy of the X chromosome from their mother and one copy of the Y chromosome from their father. If their X chromosome has a DMD gene mutation, they will have Duchenne muscular dystrophy
A mutation is a change in a genetic sequence. As the substitution of a single DNA building block, or nucleotide base, with another nucleotide base. Meanwhile, larger mutations can affect many genes on a chromosome.
What's mutation ?
A gene mutation is a permanent alteration in the DNA sequence that makes up a gene, such that the sequence differs from what is found in most people, acquired mutations occur at some time during a person's life and are present only in certain cells, not in every cell in the body.
