Storyboard Text

  • Edward Jenner noticed that milkmaids who were with the cows everyday didn't seem to catch smallpox.
  • He thought about it and came to the conclusion that the milkmaids were catching cowpox from the cows which seemed to make them immune to smallpox.
  • He tested his theory on a young boy named James Phillips by giving him a small dose of cowpox. He did this by taking pus from one of the milkmaids' cowpox sores and injected it into the boy.
  • The young boy caught the cowpox and became ill with it. However, he soon recovered.
  • When he was recovered he went back to Edward Jenner and Jenner gave him a tiny dose of smallpox.
  • James Phillips never caught the smallpox which proved that Jenner's theory was correct. He tried his theory out on many more people.
