  • The Raids
  • Want Our Money?
  • Hey, do you want to just take our money?
  • I will happily, and an FYI, you're going to have to wait another 2 years for your men.
  • No More Money!
  • When Jefferson was in office foreign threats were evident and abundant.  His first foreign challenge was the mess from both Washington's and Adam's presidency.  Bands of marauders known as the "Barbary Pirates", raided U.S. ships and imprisoned the crew.  To prevent this Washington and Adams paid the pirates ransom money.
  • Captured Again
  • HA!
  • Washington agreed to pay $1 million in ransom and even after the release of the prisoners, the U.S. continued to pay them. Overall, after Adam's presidency, the U.S. paid the pirates 20% of all federal revenues. Then when Jefferson becmae president he refused to pay anymore.
  • We Tried
  • When Jefferson became president he refused to pay.
  • I am the Captain Now
  • I am the captain now
  • Ruler of Tripoli (the pirates state) ordered an American ship capture.  So Jefferson dispatched warships to the Mediterranean to blockade the state.  This ended up not working and resulted in a capture of a 307 member crew.
  • Tripoli demanded 200,000 ransom, but instead Lt. Stephen Decatur led a raid and boarded the Philadelphia.  He then set the captured ship on fire, but the crew remained captive.
  • 2 years later William Eaton led a ragged force of 300 men accompanied by 8 eight U.S. marines and 2 navy midshipmen.   This raid ended in the capture of  the city.  This then made their government sign a peace treaty with America which resulted in the release of all the U.S. hostages.  (after paying a 60,000 ransom)
