Food is too costly I can not afford to buy a loaf of bread.
The March Revolution
Bread for the Workers
The Tsar Abdicates
In 1915-1917 Russia was in a full crisis. There was a food shortage due to inflation. This inflation was caused by the war. Russia was fighting against Germany and losing badly.
The November Revolution
On the 8th of March some bakeries in the St Petersburg (also called the Peterograd) ran out of Bread. Hungry workers smashed the bakeries. By the end of that week 250,000 workers were demonstrating, and striking. The government responded by sending out soldiers to disperse the crowd. Though in some parts of the city the soldiers joined the protesters.
The Russian Civil War
The Tsar abdicated March 16th. He was forced to abdicate by his generals. He had come to the Petrograd to try and take control of the strikes. Instead he was made to give up the thrown. The Provisional Government set up by the Duma replaced him as leader of Russia.
My son is starving, we have no food!
Lenin's Bolsheviks ceased control of the Petrograd. They took control of the Provisional Government set up by the Duma and gave all power to the Soviet Party.
The Soviet government known as the Sovnarkom was violently opposed by many different forces: rich landowners, supporters of the Tsar, the Mensheviks and some of Russia former allies from the war, they were known as the white army. Though ultimately the Bolsheviks or the red army won the conflict.
In order to keep the red troops fed Lenin introduced War Communism. War Communism meant that all factories and industries were nationalized. The Sovnarkom took extra food from peasants. This harsh economic policy resulted in widespread famine and diseases.
My family is sick. The Bolsheviks have taken all our food!
