Colleges began to form that accepted women and blacks. Emma Willard established the Troy Female Seminary for women only and in 1837 the Oberlin College was established welcoming men, women, and blacks.
Education was now brought to the people's front doors through the lyceum lectures. Lecturers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson became widely known for travelling through the states giving lectures on philosophy, nature, and humanity.
