- The legend of Tapuae-o-uenuku and how the mountain came to guard the Wairau is told here. A young man named Uenuku lived a long time ago. He spent his time in Hawaiki, his home, exploring. He had spent his time discovering incredible things like trees, birds, and wildlife, but now he would discover something new.
- He heard a wonderful waiata as night fell and decided to learn more. He went with the flow Hinepkohurangi, the mist maiden, and her sister Hinewai, the morning dew, were playing and laughing in a nearby river when they heard the wonderful sound of a woman's singing. Uenuku greeted Hinepkoharangi and offered to take him about Hawaiki.
- They started spending all of their evenings together and fell in love soon after. They enjoyed their time together, but every night, Their time together was limited because each morning, before the sun rose, Hinepkohurangi's sister, Hinewai, would come and retrieve her to return to the kingdom of the gods, keeping their love hidden. Uenukus' buddies eventually discovered how little time he spent with them and decided to speak with him.
- Despite the fact that he knew there would be repercussions if he told them the truth, he did so. He didn't want to tell the truth. Maukatere and Te Hau, two of his closest pals, were informed. - They explored this new region for a while before becoming exhausted. Uenukus' friend discovered a large tract of land ideal for cultivating kumara and decided to stay and live there. Uenuku said his goodbyes to his companion and went in search of a spot to rest.he decision to ascend a mountain in the hopes of getting closer to Hinepkohurangi and being reunited. Hinepkohurangi' kept an eye on him and prayed to the gods for a chance to be reunited with him. They accepted her desire and hugged each other, eventually expanding to become the powerful tapuae - o - uenuku. When a rainbow appears high in the sky over Tapuae-o-uenuku, it is Hinepūkohurangi’ and Uenuku welcoming them and saying hi.
