Marguerite teaches Eddie a very important lesson, that love never dies, it simply changes. Memory is your new love. Because you can't be with the actual loved one themselves, you cherish the memories you had with them. Marguerite said that she has loved Eddie forever, when in Heaven after she died. Eddie loved Marguerite as well, even after her death.
I always loved you Marguerite.
I did save my the little girl! My death has meaning to it! I kept her from dying, even if it meant taking my life instead.
I always loved you too Eddie, even while in Heaven.
Eddie's last person in Heaven is a girl named Tala. Eddie killed Tala during the war many years ago, by burning her alive inside a building that he set on fire at a Philippine war camp, where Eddie was held prisoner. Eddie feels terrible, but Tala teaches him that Eddie saved many children from death throughout his lifetime, and that he did actually save Annie during his death, by pushing her out of the way as the cart was falling, sacrificing himself for her.
Eddie later went to his Heaven, which was full of all the people Eddie helped save throughout his lifetime. This shows how all lives and deaths are connected, as because of Eddie's actions, he saved all these people from dying. Eddie now knows that his life had purpose, he saved people from dying.
