Times had changed, the world was no longer strickened with wars and poverty. It was now a peaceful paradise, however in this paradise he was fighting an internal struggle, in a society of satisfaction, he was frustrated. While everyone had a large smile plastered on their faces, he was stuck with a permanent frown. No clown could make him laugh, no child could make him smile. This was a young man with no vitality, a human with no happiness living in this harmonious world.
Although the man didn't want to admit it, he knew he was being cast aside. He knew how hard others tried to befriend him but his unappealing frown would always get in the way. Walking home alone made him feel sad... But feeling sad only deepened his unwanted frown. So, he set out for a solution, a mask that would give him the one thing he yearned for the most. A smile.
It truly felt like paradise, he was normal... He had friends, he was social, he could finally be worry-free. He was never alone, he would always laugh with his friends and make funny jokes and have dinner at his best friend's place. But... the consequences finally sank in. Looking in the mirror for the first time since he got the mask shocked him. He saw his ragged face with the sides of his mouth drooping down. His thick eyebrows were furrowed and his glassy eyes held no emotion.
He was scared, there was nothing left of him, he can pretend to be happy, funny or blissful but his face would never betray his real thoughts. In truth, he was nothing, he wasn't happy nor content, he wasn't himself, he was hiding behind a mask and ignoring who he really is. He wasn't colorful and vibrant like a butterfly, he was as bland as paper. The next day was torture for him, hiding behind his mask was no longer fun. His one lone tear slid down his wrinkled face as he softly laughed along with his peers.
A depressing feeling welled up in the young man's heart, it was growing and growing, making his hands quiver and tremble, his laugh became squeaky and his quick strides became small and wobbly. His wobbly feet accidentally stepped on his bestfirends shoe, making her crash into the ground. Her quiet sobs were only heard by him as she ushered the others away, covering her face while looking down at her slightly bruised knees. As he bent down to lend her a hand he saw her exposed face. Her disguise was shattered into pieces.
It revealed her sunken moist eyes, a deep frown and dark eye bags. All this time, while he was lamenting, she too, was hiding behind a mask. A strange sense of surprise and euphoria flourished, replacing his sadness... Pushing her hands away from her face, he pulled his mask off, causing others to gasp at his bizarre expression. "You are not a alone," he said, the words that the both of them had wanted to hear since the day they were born. Unknownst to the two of them, a small but visible floppy smile appeared on the faces that they hated so much. That day they realized something... something they won't forget in a long time. The end.
