Your Highnesses, the poor are suffering! Please stop with the harsh taxes.
We do not care. *Gasp* JINX
The year was 1788. The King, queen, and heirs to the throne lived in the Palace of Versaille, 12 miles away from the nearest town. King Louis XV was very disconnected from his people and imposed large taxes on them. He was an all around a bad king.
With rumors of a revolt spreading through Paris, the king and his advisors decided to have the Estate Generals assemble at Versailles. The first Estate was made of nobility, the second Estate was made of the clergy, and the Third Estate was made of the poor which was more than 90% of the population. The first two Estates overwhelmed the third and continued to vote against them.
At the assembly June 20, 1789, the Third Estate was locked out of their meeting place. They then stormed the tennis court and took the "Tennis Court Oath", swearing that they would not disband until a constitution was established. They began calling themselves the "National Assembly."
The king then instructed the clergy and nobility to meet w ith the other estates. He decided to recognize them but not accept them. He also ordered military units to head to Paris. This news outraged the towns people.
On July 14th, 1789, the people stormed Bastille for gunpowder to fight back against the coming military units. They killed the guards and took home bricks as souveniers.
The townspeople walked around with heads on spikes as a way to show off their victory. This was only the beginning of the revolution and the start of the guillotine. For life, liberty, and fraternity!
