Sam goes to his father and tells him that he is joining the war. His father, Life, doesn't like the idea of his son joining the war. Life and Sam get in a big argument about what happens when you join.
One night Sam was determined that he would steal his father's gun. Life called the gun Brown Bess. It was recommended to carry a gun to kill wolves that came down into the pastures after their lambs. These guns were also used for general protection.
On the way to Verplanks Point, Life and Tim, Life's younger son, run into a dilemma.They are being attacked by cowboys! These cowboys are also known as armed cattle thieves. Reluctantly, father and Tim make the cowboys flee because other loyalists ride in on their horses after they heard the scream of Tim.
On the way back from the visit to Verplanks, Father and Tim run into another problem. Because it already started snowing, the oxen were struggling to keep moving forward. Also, it was very hard to see where they were going. Father,with all these other problems on his mind, didn't want to run into any more cowboys on their way home.
Life's family finds out that he had died on a prison ship. Father died from a disease called cholera. This was unusual because father died on a prison ship of the side he was on.
Sam is charged for cattle thief. Sam has a bag over his head and walks to the executioner. Sam is killed.
