In Montreal, the poor were struggling to stay alive, many of them dying of diseases, hunger, and dehydration.
The city's poor were hired to do the dangerous jobs nobody else wanted. Because there were so many poor, they could be paid less than average.
In the end, the urban poor of Montreal had a major position in the advance of technology in the city, by doing the jobs that were gruesome, but necessary.
