  • During the 2nd Great Awakening, many speakers like Charles Finney held many crowds during his speeches about converting to the Christian faith. 
  • Horace Mann thought that his country's political future depended on the knowledge of the children, so he pushed for schools with a better curriculum, and with experienced teachers. 
  • The Temperance movement was at its peak, as families pushed away from alcohol in hopes it would give them a high status. 
  • The mentally ill were originally proclaimed as insane or possessed. Along with other reformers, Dorothea Dix helped the treatment of these people gradually improve. 
  • Henry David Thoreau, a Transcendentalist, spent 2 years by Walden pond, recording details of the wilderness, soon turning them into a book: Walden. 
  • Slavery was still going during the time of Societal Reforms, but the idea of Abolition rose, and sectionalism increased.
