The King is not following my rules and I want a end to this
Pope Gregory VII had strong ideas about the powers of the Pope. "I want authority over all church and secular leaders. I will be able to choose the bishops who lead in my churches and this will make me have enough power to remove the king from throne,".
If he will not listen to me I will have to excommunicate him from the church because of his behavior
"What are these new rules the Pope thinks he can set without my approval", said King Henry IV. Henry reacted because it was a direct attack on his own power and rights. "I am going to ignore his rules and set my own bishop for the city of Milan, Italy,".
I think our Pope should be treated with higher authority
I think the Pope was selfish and cruel to our leader
Pope Gregory VII stated, "I will appoint a rival Bishop against the Kings because he is not following my rules,". The Popes helper said, " Dosen't the King feel threatened from his power,". The Pope said, "Of course I am trying to have the most power in the Empire,".
I proudly sign this document of the Concordat of Worms so that there will be no more conflict between Popes and Kings.
"Since the Pope has now sent a rival bishop to lead the church, I now want to completely get rid of him because he is not respecting the king,". The king excommunicated the king, meaning he cant be apart of the church anymore. The Pope accepted the word and freed Henry's subjects from their feudal oaths of loyalty to the emperor.
Members of the clergy and secular rulers took sides. King Henry felt guilty for what he had done to the Pope so to end his excommunication he visited him in an Italian castle. Some people say he waited three days out in the snow before the Pope let him in and forgave him. Though the Pope forgave him the rivalry still continued and the King had to force the Pope from office by leading his armies to him.
Even after that generation died there were still conflicts over power. The church ad the Holy Roman Empire reached an agreement called the Concordat of Worms. This gave the church the authority to appoint their own bishops. It also allowed the emperors to give the bishops grants of land, to bishops in order to win their loyalty. Even with that agreement, people still argue.
