  • The Revolution of 1911 created a republic. Sun Yat-Sen was a political idealist who wanted to unify China under a republic. The country is divided into two camps: Beijing and Sun Yat-Sen's government.
  • Long March, 1934

  • Students revolted, fueled by nationalist and communist ideas of re-unifying China.
  • Japanese Invasion, 1937
  • After the Nationalists and Communists unify China by capturing Beijing, the nationalist leader Chiang Kai
  • Mao led his followers away from Nationalist control in order to rebuild communism.
  • Because of Japan's invasion, both sides halted the war to fight Japan together. The nationalist army was weakened, while the Communist army actually grew stronger.
