  • Hello, I am Cleopatra. This is my friend, Marvin the mummy.
  • And we're gonna tell you about the mummification process of ancient Egypt
  • Hi, I'm Marvin!
  • To learn about mummification, we need to know why it was done
  • Mummification was done because the Egyptians believed in order for the Pharaoh to move to the afterlife, his or her body had to be preserved so that it looked the same as as it did in life.
  • Well, Marvin, it was usually performed by priests or artisans, like this one right here.
  • So, Cleopatra, who performed the mummification process?
  • Now we are going to go over the steps of the process. Take it away, Marvin!
  • Thanks, Cleopatra! The first step was taking the body to an "Ibu" or "place of purification" and rinsing it with palm wine and water from the Nile.
  • Next, all the organs except the heart were removed from the body. This was because these were the first parts to decompose
  • Fun Fact. Egyptians would use a hook to crush and remove the brain through the nose!
  • Next, the body was stuffed and covered with natron, which dried it out
  • Natron is a mineral salt found in dried lake beds.
