  • The Spanish American War was where Cuba rebelled against Spain. Cuba was tired of being
  • February 1, 1898.
  • President William McKinley’s role in peace
  • We shall not interviene in this war. Peace must be maintained.
  • controlled by Spain, and so they decided they were going to fight for their independence. Spain sent soldiers to control the Cubans. Later the U.S. deciedes to help and sends a Naval cruiser.
  • McKinley sends a list of demands to Spain. Compensation for the Maine.
  • Demands for the Spanish
  • The U.S.S. Maine exploded in Havana Harbor. No one knows how or why it exploded. Many people blamed the Spanish.
  • Treaty of Paris
  • McKinley hesitates intervening in the war even though Americans call for the U.S. to interviene. Peace is maintained.
  • Territory Gained by the U.S.
  • End to the reconcentration camps, a truce in Cuba, and Cuban independence.
  • The U.S. signed the Treaty with Spain in December 1898. In the treaty, the Spanish government recognized Cuba’s independence and gives the US new terrirory.
  • Treaty of Paris
  • The United States gaines the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific Island of Guam.
