  • James Madison was elected president in 1808. He served two four year terms until 1817.
  • I am James Madison, the president of the United States.
  • You must join the US navy.
  • Impressment- The British captured US sailors and forced them to join the British navy.
  • Native American Resistance- The Indians got weapons from the British and attacked the U.S.
  • Causes of the War of 1812
  • Oliver Hazard Perry was in charge of the U.S. Navy and Lake Eerie. Harrison defeated the British at the Battle of Thames. Tecumseh's death ended the Indian Resistance.
  • Phase 1: Naval Battles and Battle of Thames
  • Britain destroyed Washington D.C. and burned the capital and White House. The militiamen kept the fort from being taken. This inspired Fian Lisscott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner.
  • Phase 2: Burning of Washington D.C. and Fort McHenry
  • Andrew Jackson was a war hero. There was 2,000 British troops dead, and only 71 U.S. troops were dead.
  • Phase 3: Battle of New Orleans
  • The war of 1812 made Americans proud of their country. It also was good for manufacturing because people were forced to produce goods that was normally acquired by Britain.
