In 1587 John White and 117 colonists traveled from England to Roanoke Island to start a settlement.
We are leaving!
They started the settlement and were doing great, but supplies were running low.
John White went back to England and got supplies, but could not return to the settlement until the war in England ended years later.
I believe the colonists waited as long as they could for White, but they ran too low on supplies. Their only option was to join the Croatoan indians and move to Croatoan Island.
When White returned everyone was gone including all the houses and boats. The only thing he found was CRO and Croatoan carved into trees. This was the plan if they had to leave they would carve the name of the place they were going. White would have traveled to Croatoan Island, but there was a storm so he had to go back to England.
The colonist joined the Croatoan indians, moved to Croatoan Island, and lived happily ever after.
